<i>"James, Jeremy and the rest of the Suburban Rails team were the most talented and professional group of guys I've ever worked with. Their skatepark design abilities were nothing short of perfection as well as their work ethics and efforts on site. We built an 86,000 sq foot Indoor Sports Facility with the best Indoor Skatepark in all of South Carolina - thanks to the Suburban Rails Team. We did extensive research to find the best Indoor skatepark designers/builders in the U.S. and Suburban Rails executed everything they promised and more and completed it on time. I would highly recommend this team for your next Skatepark Project."

to "skateproof" or not to skateproof... that is the question

i received an email from an architect today about "skate proofing" a new office building.

<i>
I have an odd question, maybe not odd but one I wouldn’t think you would get asked very often but I figured you might know the best answer. I am a designer in Albuquerque NM and am currently working on an office building redesign. We have come up with a plan that has several planters and stair rails, a basic haven for boarders. (little background: I don’t skate, a lot of my friends do, both my brothers have been for years. Through school I learned that the best way to design a skateboard proof site is to have an encouraging design that can handle the activity without the deterioration.) Unfortunately the owners aren’t in the same state of mind. They would like a skateboard proof site that discourages the activity all together. So to my question. We are looking for some non conventional methods of “skateboard proofing” our design. If you have any suggestions at to where I can search for information I would appreciate it. Thank you for your time.
</i>

thanks for your interest _______. unfortunately i can't help you with this subject. i'm not trying to be too harsh, but i call "skateboard proofing" <B>nazi skateboard architecture and design</B>. good luck in your endeavors - and hopefully you can persuade your mentors not to take this approach. a unique solution would be to make one out of the way section of the design skateboard friendly... then you can make everything else "skate proof".

SAVE CARLSBAD SKATEPARK

Help! Help! The Dozers Are Coming!

On March 13, 1976 Carlsbad Skatepark opened, making it the world's first. Covered with dirt in the early 80's it has remained buried for about 20 years but could be easily excavated and restored.

Our vision for the park is to restore the original facility as a historical landmark, add new modern street and pool terrain and build the world's largest skateboarding museum with facilities for art, photo and film exhibits.

The skatepark sits on a 6-acre parcel in the corner of the Carlsbad Raceway property, which is scheduled for grading in November as a part of a 135-acre industrial park being developed by the H.G. Fenton Company of San Diego.

City of Fairfield / Hamilton Ohio Skatepark Cencern

this is a letter to the City of Faifield and Hamilton parks and rec. directors discussing the safety issues with the paint used to cover the skatepark graffiti. Take note cities and communities, remove or leave the graffiti - DO NOT PAINT OVER IT.

August 17, 2004

To Bob Harris and Jim Bell,

I’m concerned about the safety of the riders at the new Fairfield / Hamilton Skatepark. A few days before the skatepark “Grand Opening” Rhocky Rhodes (Hamilton Engineer) contacted me and asked how to take care of the graffiti that was sprayed all over the park. I recommended painting, pressure washing or a “graffiti remover” type product.
Administrative powers determined that paint would be the best option. I don’t know who determined that which paint was going to be used. This paint choice is the main problem. The paint used to cover the graffiti is the same paint used to paint lines on public roads. When it should’ve been a flat / non-gloss paint. This paint has 2 major flaws. On a sunny day the white paint blinds the rider and the paint is becoming slicker as more dirt and debris accumulate.

I initially discussed my concern with Jim Bell (Fairfield Parks and Rec Dir.) shortly after the paint was applied and we thought it might wear off over time. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case. 5 months have passed and the paint is not wearing off rather it’s becoming slicker. I'd like to stress that I'm not blaming anyone for this problem. I think it's a simple mistake that desperately needs to be addressed.

In my professional opinion the park needs to be shut down until the paint is removed from critical areas to avoid any unnecessary injuries and or lawsuits. I'm not sure how to handle the logistics of shutting the park down. You should be able to remove the paint from critical areas within the park with an industrial strength pressure washer or two in one work day (maybe your city/park maintenance might have an easier method). I will be happy to define the critical areas that need the paint removed.

To put this in perspective. Imagine that a city road had an oil slick on it and cars continued to crash on it. The city was notified of the oil slick and did nothing about it. . It is very sad to see an exceptionally built skatepark made unrideable and unsafe because of this paint... Please contact me with any additional questions or comments.

Sincerely,

Skateboarding to Better Health / As appearing on cnn.com

<img src="http://i.a.cnn.net/cnn/2004/HEALTH/diet.fitness/08/13/skateboard.parks.ap/story.vert.skate.preston.ap.jpg" align=left>For Immediate Attention
Subject: Skateboarding to Better Health / As appearing on cnn.com

Riders drawn to adrenaline; experts say it's a great workout.
Friday, August 13, 2004 Posted: 10:46 PM EDT (0246 GMT)

SAYREVILLE, New Jersey (AP) -- While the tennis courts at Kennedy Park are bare on a hot afternoon, parents keep dropping off teenagers at the skate park, home to all the day's action.

A dozen boys sit on the ledge, cooling off while watching others take turns flying downhill on the concrete slope. Forget Little League: In some areas, skateboarding is now the sport of choice.

Clad in helmets and jeans, the teens have their choice of skating into a clover-shaped bowl -- resembling an oddly shaped empty swimming pool -- or over a series of obstacles not unlike the park benches or railings used in street skating.

"You can just, like, go out here and do your own thing," said Nick Marrone, 13, visiting from Poughquag, New York. "It's whatever you want; you're just having fun."

The sport once mainly practiced on backyard ramps and in Southern California skate parks has found universal appeal. One estimate is that there are 12 million skateboarders nationwide and more than 1,000 public skateparks on top of the multitude of private ones.

It's a great rush," said 14-year-old Amelia Brodka, taking a short break from the vert ramp at the indoor RexPlex Skate Park in Elizabeth.

The sport is growing not only in the suburbs of big cities, but also in small communities like Searcy, Arkansas.

"There are more and more kids every single day getting involved and the stereotypes are really being lifted," said Alan Holloway, program coordinator for Searcy Parks and Recreation, which opened its municipal skate park in 2000 and expanded it in 2002 because of heavy use.

The core market seems to be in the 10- to 15-year-old group of "energetic, crazy young kids who are fearless," and who now surpass the number of Little League baseball players, said Miki Vuckovich of the Tony Hawk Foundation, established by perhaps the sport's best-known athlete.

"A lot of kids are looking for alternatives now; they don't want to do team sports," said Mark Sperling, founder of Op Girls Learn to Ride, which teaches skateboarding and other action sports to females. "Skateboarding is a way for them to express who they are and their creativity."

It's also inexpensive -- just grab a secondhand skateboard and head to the streets. And while some skate competitively, others say they have fun without the pressures or politics of team sports.

"There's no coach yelling at you that you bobbled the play," said Chris Li, 16, of Livingston, New Jersey, who is lobbying his hometown to build a municipal park. "It's not like you bobble one play, and you're benched for the rest of the season."

The sport's popularity dates to the 1960s and has surged again in the last 10 years thanks in part to the X Games, the action sports competition broadcast on ESPN and ABC.

And its appeal these days is ever wider. Some parks have an "Old Man's Night;" and girls and women acccount for about 20 percent of skateboarders. There's even a California-based International Society of Skateboarding Moms.

"We just can't get this kind of buzz from scrapbooking," said founder Barb Odanaka, 41, of Laguna Beach, Calif. "We can't get this on the tennis courts and we certainly can't get it from shopping at the mall. There's something about looking down a vertical wall of cement and basically hurling yourself down this wall on four wheels. That is a rush like nothing else."

Avid skateboarders maintain their sport is no more dangerous than football or soccer.

Barb Ordanaka, left, with Alison McGuire, says "We just can't get this kind of buzz from scrapbooking."

Skateboarding-related accidents accounted for 113,180 emergency room injuries in 2002, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. That's about a third of the bicycle injuries suffered by kids under age 15, and about half the number of injuries from playground equipment.

Aspiring riders are usually drawn more to the adrenaline rush than the fitness benefits, but it does provide a great workout, experts say.

"It's cardiovascular; it's better than running," said Brendan Flattery, 28, who runs skateboarding programs at the RexPlex. "You're constantly moving."

Balance is key, and it also helps to have a sense of direction and agility. While learning to skateboard requires patience and perseverance, Vuckovich said the rewards are many.

"You're always progressing, you're always learning something new," he said. "You see things and you want to replicate it. You want to be that guy. The closer you get there, the more the mystery is solved and the more excited you get. It's a great thing for kids to do."

The trend also means teens are spending less time on video games.

"The more time that you can limit them from being squatted in front of the TV, and actually get them outside physically doing something, that's a good thing," said Searcy parks coordinator Holloway.

<b>Sean O'Loughlin</b> education, design and build consultant
Sean has been skating for 20+ years. Sean is the director of skateboarding at <a href="http://www.oski.org/html/scra_skate2.htm">UC Berkeley's skateboarding youth program</a>. The program has had incredible success since inception in 1999. Sean can assist with the development and implementation of a skateboarding curriculum for your public or private park. Similar to a swim instructor teaching you how to swim, Sean can teach your staff how to "teach" skateboarding.

<i>"Beginners will learn skateboard mechanics and basic riding skills such as balance, carving, riding transitions, and dropping-in. Advanced skaters learn grinds, ollies, and airs, and have the chance to learn to drop in on bigger ramps, and learn flip tricks. The advanced level is designed for the skateboarder who has been riding for at least a year. Skaters will be assessed on the first day of the session and the lessons will be adapted to their ability."</i>
